Clay Pits - place to rest and a source of food
Breakdowns with rather large water areas developed due to winning clay for the brick industry in the last decades. Those waters are seldom deeper than 3 metres and the water table permanently fluctuates. If the open pits aren't filled with refuse or building rubble, refuges for rare species of animals and plants can develop there.
In autumn the passind through shorebirds (Limicolen) use the flat banklines for search for food. Those waters are main places to rest and sources of food on their way to the winter accomodation.
You can infer the way of ingestion of food from the characteristic form of the bill.
