European Hare - Longears with demands

"Master Hare" prefers varied structures in the open countryside. It settles on the edges of wood and in bushes.

In the oppsition to the Wild Rabbit it doesn't dig a burrow but digs up a flat hollow. Therein it has its breaks.

If a fox approaches, the hare motionless huddles against the ground and lets him come close upto 3 metres. As yuo can see it is far from  being a "scaredy - cat".

When the fox gets closer, the hare has no chance but "turning tail and run". Then it darts from side to side. For a short time it reaches a speed of about 70 km/h.

Because of the many enemies the European Hare must compensate its losses with lots of youngs. The nesthollow - called Sasse - is placed in meadows or in fields during spring and early summer. Three or four times a year the doe brings 6 youngs into world. They are born covered with hair, have sight and little teeth. The doe looks after them from time to time and suckles them with high-fat, nutritous milk.
